CHAPTER 01 — THE NAME.

Growing up, nobody called me by my real name.


Walk into a room, somebody yells "Sauce!" That's how it started. That's how it stayed. Twenty-some years later, I'll be at a gas station, at a wedding, at the grocery store, and somebody from back in the day will spot me from across the parking lot and shout it. Sauce! Like no time passed.


It stuck because of the last name — Marinaro. Italian-American. Half a vowel away from marinara. The kind of name that writes its own jokes the first time a teacher reads it off a roll sheet. By the time I was ten I'd heard every sauce pun there was. By the time I was fifteen the nickname had eaten the real one. By the time I was twenty-five it didn't even feel like a nickname anymore. It was just my name.


So when it came time to start something of my own — something with my hands on it, something I'd actually wear — I wasn't going to dress it up in some made-up name to sound more clever than it was. The name was already there. It had been there my whole life. Stay Saucey wasn't a marketing decision. It was just the truth, finally on a tag.
